How to grow a potted fig tree from a store-bought fig tree

1. Choose the Right Fig Tree
Select a healthy fig tree variety suitable for containers, like ‘Petite Negra,’ ‘Brown Turkey,’ or ‘Celeste.’
2. Select a Suitable Pot
Use a large pot (18–24 inches wide) with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
3. Prepare the Potting Mix
Use a well-draining mix with peat moss, perlite/sand, and a little compost.
4. Plant the Tree
Add gravel for drainage, place the tree in the pot, and fill with potting mix. Water thoroughly.
5. Positioning and Sunlight
Place in a sunny spot with 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
6. Watering
Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Reduce watering during winter dormancy.
7. Fertilizing
Use a balanced fertilizer (8-8-8 or 10-10-10) every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
8. Pruning
Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead branches and encourage fruiting.
9. Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years to give roots more space.
10. Winter Care
Protect from frost by bringing indoors or storing in a sheltered place.
11. Harvesting
Harvest figs when they soften and droop. Enjoy fresh or dried!
With proper care, your potted fig tree will thrive and produce delicious fruit.
